How Long Does a Psychedelic Experience Last?

One of the first questions people ask before taking a psychedelic is simple: How long will I be under the influence?

The answer depends on the substance, the dose, and the person taking it. Even two people taking the same amount can have very different experiences. Your metabolism, whether you’ve eaten, your emotional state, and the environment all play a role.

One thing is certain: psychedelics deserve time and planning. You should never schedule a session between errands or assume you’ll be back to normal after a few hours. Set aside the entire day, and in some cases the following morning as well.

How long do psilocybin mushrooms last?

Typical duration: 4 to 6 hours

After eating mushrooms, most people begin noticing effects within 20 to 60 minutes. The experience usually builds gradually before reaching its strongest point about two hours after onset. Your facilitator might be able to give you advice on speeding up the process.

For many people, the timeline looks something like this:

  • 20 to 60 minutes: First effects begin
  • 1 to 2 hours: Effects become stronger
  • 2 to 4 hours: Peak experience
  • 4 to 6 hours: Gradual return to baseline
  • Up to 8 hours: Mild after-effects or emotional openness

Although most of the psychedelic effects have ended after six hours, many people feel thoughtful, emotionally sensitive, or physically tired for the rest of the day. Sleeping can sometimes be difficult immediately afterward. Experts recommend giving yourself space and time after any trip, especially a psilocybin experience.

The intensity depends heavily on dose. A small recreational dose may feel manageable, while a higher therapeutic or spiritual dose can feel much longer because your sense of time changes dramatically.

Ayahuasca

Typical duration: 4 to 8 hours

Ayahuasca ceremonies usually begin with drinking a brewed mixture containing DMT and MAO inhibitors. Effects often begin within 30 to 60 minutes, although this varies.

Many ceremonies follow a similar pattern:

  • 30 to 60 minutes: Initial effects
  • 1 to 3 hours: Strong visions and emotional work
  • 3 to 6 hours: Continued processing
  • 6 to 8 hours: Gradual conclusion

Unlike mushrooms or LSD, ayahuasca is usually taken in a structured ceremony with facilitators present throughout the night. Many participants experience nausea or vomiting, often referred to as “purging.” While uncomfortable, many participants consider it part of the process.

Even after the ceremony ends, many people spend the following day resting and reflecting. Integration is often considered just as important as the ceremony itself.

Ketamine

Typical duration: 45 minutes to 2 hours

Ketamine works very differently from classic psychedelics. It is a dissociative medicine rather than a serotonergic psychedelic.

The timeline depends on how it is administered.

Intravenous infusions often produce noticeable effects within minutes, while lozenges or intramuscular injections may take slightly longer.

A typical experience looks like this:

  • 5 to 15 minutes: Onset
  • 20 to 45 minutes: Peak experience
  • 45 to 90 minutes: Return to awareness
  • 1 to 2 hours: Most acute effects resolved

Although people often feel physically normal after a couple of hours, they should not drive or make important decisions until the next day unless specifically cleared by their medical provider.

Ketamine clinics generally require patients to arrange transportation home because coordination and judgment can remain impaired even after the primary effects wear off.

LSD

Typical duration: 8 to 12 hours

LSD is among the longest-lasting commonly used psychedelics.

Most people begin feeling effects within 30 to 90 minutes. The experience builds slowly before reaching a peak several hours later.

A typical timeline includes:

  • 30 to 90 minutes: Onset
  • 2 to 4 hours: Increasing intensity
  • 4 to 6 hours: Peak experience
  • 6 to 10 hours: Gradual decline
  • 10 to 12 hours: Residual effects

Some people continue feeling mentally stimulated well into the evening, making sleep difficult even after the psychedelic effects have largely faded.

Because of its duration, LSD requires the greatest time commitment. If you begin in the afternoon, you may still be awake long after midnight.

Why Duration Matters

Knowing how long a psychedelic lasts helps you prepare for a safer experience.

Give yourself enough time so you never feel rushed. Turn off work notifications, avoid making plans later in the day, and create a comfortable environment where you can remain until the experience is complete. Never use psychedelics alone outside.

If you are taking a larger dose, or trying a psychedelic for the first time, consider having a trusted trip sitter present. A calm, sober person can provide reassurance, help with practical needs, and step in if the experience becomes confusing or overwhelming.

Every Experience Is Different

These timelines are averages, not guarantees.

The amount you take, your body, your mindset, and the setting all influence how long the experience feels. Even after the drug has worn off, many people spend days or weeks reflecting on insights, emotions, or changes in perspective.

The experience may end after a few hours, but the work of understanding it often continues much longer.
